- Millefiori from Murano
Millefiori, meaning literally ‘thousands of flowers’, are hand made beautifully coloured tiny glass bead cylinders about 5 mm high, each containing a flower, circle, star or other pattern. They can be used to great effect, individually for eyes, or as tiny flowers in your mosaic work. The Millefiori technique dates back to the Alexandrian and Roman ages and was recovered during the Middle Ages by the glassmakers of Murano, a lagoon island near Venice, where millefiori is still made today. Millefiori start as thick glass rods, which are stretched into very thin rods. These are then cut up into tiny cylinders. Millefiori are traditionally fused onto clear glass to make paperweights, pillboxes or jewellery such as necklaces and pendants. Millefiori is inevitably expensive but if used sparingly, a 100g bag of millefiori will go a long way and give a beautiful added dimension to your work
